Stressed Dada's - Gales Festival Mild

Post  CyberPaddy66 on Wed Aug 19, 2009 9:47 pm

I received this brew from SD about 1 week after it was bottled so I stuck it in the fridge and left it for as long as I could Laughing As with the other critique I'll approach this with an out of 5 list style...

All values are out of 5 where 1 is not good and 5 is great!

Presentation of bottle: 4
Pressure in bottle: 4
Liveliness of brew: 5
Head formation: 2
Head retention: 1
Initial smell: 3
Initial flavour: 3
Lingering flavour / after taste: 3
Comparison to original brew if cloned: I can only compare with Geordie Mild and it gets a 3 as it's a mild Razz

Final Verdict: 3

Breakdown: My initial hopes for this beer were quite high as it's only the 2nd time I've tried any AG and despite a few minor flaws I was pleasantly pleased with the results. Upon first pouring the brew into the glass the smell was a little vague but I'd expect that from a mild, however there was no signs of much head despite my attempts to make it froth. Whilst it sat there in the glass it had the appearance of a rum and coke as the brew had plenty of life (like the last brew I tried), the little bubbles rising up the glass and popping on the surface were a testament to that. My first taste left me feeling a little unsure of what I was drinking but the after-taste was lovely and left a nice almost treacle like hit to your tonsils, by the time I got 1/2 way down the glass I was ready to order the next round.

Thank you Ian for sending me my second ever AG beer, I'm sorry if my critique leaves you a little headless like the beer but if I manage to produce a mild of equal level to this I may give up recommending the Geordie for good affraid

Almost forgot the picture...

Thanks for the critique mate. Its good to get feedback on your beers. From experience, I've never had a great deal of luck in procing a clinging head from any of my bottled beers. Whereas from kegs, a perfect head on every brew, every time.

I had a spare bottled in plastic that was intended for sending on, but never got round to it. So out of curiosity, I opened it and snapped a piccy straight away, then at 5 mins and then at 10 mins. I also have some in glass bottles to, so will add the same pictures later from one of those. Just gotta finish cooking sunday lunch first.

I definately think that the beer loses it head production/retention properties when sending through the post.

Head retention issues aside the brew was very tasty, I'd be very happy if I brewed something like that with my AG kit Very Happy
